The balanced choice
Crete is large enough that choosing the island is only half the decision. Rethymno is the highest-quality and most balanced choice within it:
- Authentic character.
- Stunning landscapes and unique beaches.
- High-caliber visitors.
- Renowned gastronomy.
- Strong interest from new investors.
- Limited overdevelopment compared to other areas.
What is actually there
Rethymno's old town is one of the best-preserved Venetian and Ottoman townscapes in Greece, and it is a working town rather than a museum piece. The old Venetian harbour, the waterfront and the narrow streets behind it carry the evening trade for most of the year.
Beyond the town, the region runs from the north coast beaches to Preveli's palm-lined river gorge and the Agios Vasileios coast in the south.
Who visits
Rethymno attracts a higher-caliber visitor than the island's volume destinations, which shows up on the owner's side as longer stays, better rates and less exposure to the cheapest end of the market.
Gastronomy is a large part of that draw. Cretan cooking is one of the best-documented regional cuisines in the Mediterranean, and Rethymno is one of the places people travel to eat it.
Limited overdevelopment
This is the point that matters most for an investor and the hardest one to reverse.
Much of Crete's north coast has been built out. Rethymno has not - and scarcity of well-located, well-built stock is precisely what supports value over time.
Crete's hotspot today
Interest from new investors is strong and rising. Rethymno is Crete's hotspot now, in the window before the stock catches up with the attention.
